International Center

Hosei University, as a university actively engaged in internationalization/globalization policies has steadily promoted relations with overseas institutions since the early 1970s, with the International Center as its contact point. Starting with tie-ups with America, England, France, Russia, China and Korea, there are at present (as of January 2012) academic cooperation and student exchange agreements with 94 universities and institutions abroad (Partner Universities [pdf]).

The Center's responsibilities include the overseeing of international students and the support of Japanese students sent overseas, international researchers in the Hosei International Fund (HIF) Program and those from institutions with which the University has academic cooperation agreements. A total of 375 scholarship and privately funded international students (as of May 1, 2009) are enrolled in the University's undergraduate and graduate divisions. The Center provides support and counseling for students concerning accommodations, scholarship funding and everyday life. It also oversees international students' independent activities and those of the Hosei International Student Association.

Every year, approximately 35 students are sent to partner universities Hosei has exchange agreements with while at the same time 30-40 exchange students from those universities are welcomed to Hosei. Students need pay only the tuition of their home universities, thus reducing the financial burden of studying abroad. In addition, students electing to study abroad on their own may avail themselves of a program which allows transfer of credits earned abroad and financial support. Under the ESOP Program (Exchange Students from Overseas Program) courses in Japanese and English are available to exchange students.

Another important function of the Center is the seeing to the general welfare and support of researchers from partner universities, HIF researchers and visiting professors, from arrival to return, so that they may carry out their activities with ease. In 2009 Hosei welcomed 16 researchers from various countries. The Center also works to support Hosei academics while they carry out their research activities at partner universities overseas.

At the beginning of the 20th Century, Hosei University was the first private university to welcome international students from Qing Dynasty China; it has during the last 100 years extended this welcome to the rest of the world. With the rapid globalization process, relations with brilliant researchers and students have become an important asset for the University. The general staff of Hosei University and of the International Center stand poised and ready to help provide the most satisfactory climate and environment befitting an international university.

Exchange Students from Overseas Program (ESOP)

The Hosei University Exchange Students from Overseas Program (ESOP) was established in the Fall of 1997 with the aim of furthering international academic relations and is based on the exchange agreements with partner universities, with Hosei students going abroad to study abroad and students from abroad coming to study at Hosei. ESOP in accordance with its aims is organized around English courses and Japanese language courses not only for those students from the 30 universities representing 14 countries (as of February 2010) with which Hosei has exchange agreements but also for students who come on their own to study for a short period of time.
