Teaching
Are all courses taught in English?
Yes they are, with the exception of language courses (French, Spanish and Chinese) and Physical Education. Some Career and Adjunct subjects offered by other departments and open to GIS students are taught in Japanese.
How is GIS different from the Department of English (in the Faculty of Letters) and the Faculty of Intercultural Communication?
GIS alone offers all courses in English. This is related to the GIS mission of researching real issues impacting the world and of preparing students for international careers that require advanced communication and critical thinking skills in the English language.
My Japanese is not fluent. Is Japanese needed to study in GIS?
The general entrance examination has a Japanese language component, and the special entrance examination requires submission of an essay in Japanese. A small number of courses are taught in Japanese. Although the GIS administrative staff speaks English, you will need Japanese to use university facilities outside GIS. So a reasonably high standard of Japanese is recommended: perhaps a score of 70% or so in EJU.
Study Abroad Program
Is study abroad a required subject?
GIS study abroad is elective. However, we strongly encourage every student to take part in study abroad. Study abroad offers a wide selection of courses and subjects, and it will bring you new experiences, new friends, a strengthening of your English, and a broadened view of the world.
What does the GIS study abroad program offer?
It offers students the opportunity to enroll in regular university courses for one and two semesters/terms of study, as well as a combination of academic preparation and university courses. (GIS students are eligible to apply for an alternative university-wide scheme.)
Would I have to meet any special requirements in order to study abroad?
GIS has English language and GPA requirements for study abroad, as do the host universities. Meet those requirements, and you can go overseas for a semester of study.
Admissions
Which English test is advantageous in applying for the special entrance system, TOEFL® or IELTS?
Neither will give you an advantage, so you shouldn't worry over which to take. Rather, make certain you take the test early enough for the result to arrive in time for your application to GIS.
Is the interview in English, in Japanese, or both?
It's basically in English, although there may also be some Japanese.
Can students who have already graduated from high school take the GIS special examination?
Yes, if they meet admission requirements.
If I try to enter GIS via one examination but don't succeed, may I still take other entrance exams GIS offers?
Yes you may.
I'm already a university student elsewhere, and I have already earned credits. Can I join GIS and transfer my credits to GIS?
Unfortunately GIS does not have any provision for this.
How can I find out more about GIS and Hosei University?
Please attend one of our Open Campus events held on June and August. You are also welcome to visit the Admissions Center on the first floor of Boissonade Tower (the 27-story building on the Ichigaya campus), where you can receive various other information. The Admissions Center is open from 10 till 5 most weekdays year around for consultation in Japanese. (Before visiting the Center, please call 03 E264 E300 to confirm that it is open.)
