Chris Steele-Perkins has worked full-time as a photographer since 1971. As a photojournalist he’s covered Beirut, Afghanistan, Northern Ireland, Darfur, and many other theatres of conflict. But away from front-page news stories, he’s examined urban poverty, subcultures, the pursuit of pleasure, rural life in Britain, the elderly survivors of the “comfort women” system, daily life in Tokyo, the environs of Mount Fuji, and much more. He’s been part of Magnum Photos since 1979 (and has served as its President), and many of Magnum’s group exhibitions and anthologies from the 1980s on have shown his photographs. And his work continues: earlier this year he spent weeks in Ghana photographing amateur football there.
