Ħ21st Century Life Science

From 20th C. type molecular biology, which studies individual life phenomena differentiated by individual organisms, a new field of study that aims at understanding the whole of life phenomena occurring inside the individual on a material basis has started. This is a field of study that aims at understanding the whole of life phenomena inside the cell, where all genetic production coexists at the molecular level with understanding of all of the operations of genes in the genome. Based on this history of study, education and research performed in the Department is based on 21st C. Life Science. This very education and research is only possible in the gDepartment of Life Functionsh at Hosei University, which started in the 21st C.

ĦIndependent Education and Research Ideas

We are now gradually coming to understand that each cell and each molecule has unique characteristics. In the Department of Life Functions, a new field of studies has begun with the aim of understanding the functions of each cell and molecule. In study targeting single cells and molecules, technological restoration of measurement, observation, and analysis appropriate for such study is necessary. In learning to deepen our knowledge of a part of the life function and on such basis to aim at understanding the whole, the individual character that calls attention to the part in the whole will be formed. For students as well, the personality of each student is evaluated and originality is regarded as important. Through such education, individuals equipped with high skill at life phenomena study and lofty spirits instilled with respect for life will be fostered and sent into society, and thus we will respond to the demands of the era to close the gap between scientific technology and the human spirit.

ĦUnique Educational System

For the purpose of having individual students themselves be fostered as independent individuals equipped with independent spirit and sense of purpose, the following new education system is being introduced.

1. From the time of matriculation into the university, we provide opportunities to participate in actual research with independent assignments for each individual student, and students are able to gain scientific knowledge through practice. Moreover, an educational system where from lectures students can get answers to the questions they come up with during actual research will be introduced and persons with the habit of improving their logical thinking through self study will be fostered.
2. We foster individuals to learn analytical technology for cellular and molecular organisms, and who are eager for technological development of this purpose. Additionally, by heightening the scientific curiosity about environmental responses, forms of existence of cells and molecules in the natural world, we foster individuals with concern about the coexistence of man and the adaptation by man to nature.
3. In the research practicum and round-robin reading courses, foreign documents are widely used and English constitutes the basis of education. Additionally, study abroad is supported and students from abroad are accepted. Individuals accustomed to living daily with international sensibilities are fostered.
4. We provide an opportunity to get a sense of the vigor of the humanities and social sciences acquired from the departments of the Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Information Sciences naturally, but also from the whole of Hosei University, and to foster individuals concerned about the relationship between life and culture.
5. We offer gsocial employment programsh and provide opportunities for training in corporations outside the university and research and education organizations inside and outside Japan, and foster individuals with the ability to fit into society.

ĦThree Education and Research Fields Appropriate to 21st Century Life Science

ĦSpecialization in the Department is composed of the following three fields:

1. Genome Function Field
The genome includes numerous genes of unknown function. Understanding is attempted of the total picture of all genes in the genome and of the mechanisms by which living things arise through selection of only the genes that they comprise.
2. Protein Function Field
Mechanism proteins are synthesized by utilizing genetic information, and protein molecules display their functions by being folded in three dimensions, and then revision of the structure and function and completely new artificial protein design is attempted.
3. Cellular Function Field
In cellular function, numerous genes in the genome appear and cell function is operated cooperatively by many kinds of proteins. Understanding of complex life phenomena where numerous genes and proteins co-exist is attempted.
