Institute for Sustainability Research and Education

The Institute for Sustainability Research and Education is a new school-wide organization created August 1, 2009 to handle advancement of graduate school level research and education.
Sustainability refers to a key principle for understanding the issues confronting modern society and determining what path to best take into the world of the 21st century. How does one resolve economic sustainability crises such as climate change issues and resource supply shortages? How can a sustainable economic system and management system be realized which can over come financial crises. Amid the massive accumulation of government debt how can social service sustainability be successfully maintained? This group of issues are all interlinked and comprehensive viewpoints, handling and policy is required to clarify and resolve them.
At the time of establishment of this research and education institute it had participants of students and staff from 11 out of the 14 graduate faculties and handles a wide variety of sustainability research issues including economic system and social system sustainability based on a core theme of environmental sustainability. This research and education institute had 20 research teams participating in 5 research projects and 3 business projects under a variety of ideologies at the time of its establishment to promote research and education activities.

By raising the standard of research and education, the very purposes of a university, we hope to continue to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society by deepening and broadening cooperation and exchange with various institutions, organizations and individuals who have an awareness of and intentions towards these same issues.
