Graduate School of Politics

Politics is a wide-ranging study that includes domestic subjects such as urban issues, education, waste, and aging, as well as international issues such as development, ethnic conflicts, peace and globalization. Courses not only examines these issues, but also elucidate why these problems arise, clarify the mechanisms of their expansion and structures, and studies policies to address these issues. To study diverse issues in modern politics, traditional and classical knowledge is not sufficient.

One has to have advanced and highly-specialized knowledge of completely new and unprecedented entities, as well as law, finance, and organization. Hosei University’s Graduate School of Politics offers a middle-type program for students to become researchers and an evening course to prepare students for careers in highly professional positions.
In politics as well, as the degree of specialization in research has increased today, the acquisition of skills for working in specialized fields is an essential condition for researchers. However, on the other hand, in politics, one field out of the social sciences, what is required is not mere withdrawal into the shell of a narrow field of specialization, but rather the mode of existence of study with a wide angle of view and recognition of the social significance of research. In this specialization, broad ranging classes with regard to the respective fields of politics are offered with the possibility of acquiring broad knowledge as to politics in general. At the same time, special attention is paid through research instruction on the degree thesis so that students can acquire high-level research skills for specialized fields. The composition of subjects is rounded out with fields concerning cities and policy and the field of international research centering on the Asia region. As for instructional methods, academic advisors are responsible as a matter of course for student instruction, but one distinctive feature is that all instructors in this specialization are involved in instruction on research for all graduate students. We aim at fostering researchers equipped with both high-level specialized skills and broad perspectives.
