Program Outline
In the Graduate School of Law, students are expected to develop abilities to analyze various issues in modern society and find the best solutions for them. While there are various legal approaches to analyzing social conflicts, the Graduate School of Law offers diversified classes and seminars so that students learn how to interpret and flexibly apply what they studied in their undergraduate course. Students can study in-depth with up-to-date expertise in the fields they are interested in, and build a solid foundation of knowledge as a researcher.
Represented by the reform of the judicial system, a major crossroads in Japan’s legal landscape is nearing, and it can be said that the importance of theoretical approaches to jurisprudence has rather increased in such a situation.
The curriculum of the law specialization is organized around the traditional fundamental subjects. However, the subject matter is vast and wide-ranging--from study of basic principles of law and historical development of law to the handling of new legal phenomena in the present day--and this is where the distinctive qualities of this specialization reside. Additionally, comparative law type knowledge is vital for deep understanding of the law. For this purpose, there are classes of study on foreign source materials centering in English, German and French.
Jurisprudence is not merely a matter of internalizing knowledge, but is indispensably preconditioned on logical thinking and social concern. For these purposes, the most appropriate method is to discipline the results of daily studies in the arena of discussion. In this specialization, most classes are conducted in seminar style, with classes containing about 5 participants, providing an optimal environment for mastery of jurisprudence. Additionally, instruction on the thesis is performed one-on-one by outstanding professors who are leaders in their academic spheres.
In addition, students are expected to participate actively in various research groups inside the school and also in exchange with other universities, etc., mastering a broad spectrum of knowledge.
