Graduate School of Economics

Since its establishment in 1951, the economics major in the Graduate School of Economics has provided programs by distinguished scholars in the faculty who lead Japan’s economics theories, policies, and history. The course has produced many outstanding researchers who have contributed to the development of society.
The social issues that we are facing today have a variety of aspects. Studies that focus exclusively on only one aspect cannot deal with such multifaceted problems. In this sense, reality itself is interdisciplinary. To play a leading role in modern society, it is necessary to accurately read future trends without lying buried in everyday life through learning economics theory that is the basic principle on which modern society is built. Also, what is required is not merely specialized technical knowledge in a particular field, but the ability to take action. As an academic institution for advanced studies, our mission is to foster these abilities in our students.

Program Outline

1. Master’s Degree Program

A dual system has been adopted at the graduate school of economics wherein classes are conducted centering on the Tama Campus for daytime main programs targeting general graduate students and foreign students, and evening graduate school for working adults classes are conducted at Ichigaya, the urban center, taking commutation convenience into consideration.

Individual Subjects offered in the daytime main and evening main programs are as shown in the Subject Listing elsewhere, and, as stated in the footnote therein, out of consideration for the variety of persons taking classes, graduate students who register for daytime main and evening main programs may freely take classes for the other program inside the graduate school, and not just the classes offered in the relevant program.

2. Doctoral Degree Program

In the Doctoral Degree Program, students take classes in more than three subject areas during their three or more years in school, and, conditioned on the writing of the doctoral dissertation under instruction centering on their academic advisor, study and perform research activities.
In addition to taking classes, students are expected to participate actively in conferences, etc., in their related fields, and work on their dissertations through such activities as reporting at conferences held inside or outside Japan, submitting papers to conference journals, or participating in various types of research projects. Additionally, for graduate students in the Doctoral Degree Program, research papers based on reporting in conferences may be submitted to the Keizai Shirin journal, on condition of acceptance under the refereeing process.
