Department of Engineering and Design

Concept of Systems Design Required by the Era

20th C. is a time when people pursue functionality and practicality in manufacturing. However, as technology has become more and more complex and advanced, isn’t the human touch in design being left out? In order to return from manufacturer-oriented to user-oriented manufacturing, integration of art and engineering, it’s necessary to realize beautiful, easy-to-use, and furthermore functional design. Nowadays what’s required is the Leonard da Vinci combination of artistic and engineering sense.

Study Manufacturing Overall in Four Categories

The Department of System Design studies manufacturing that is friendly to man and the environment in general--from concept development to product management--based on man-centered artistic and functional design through the integration of cross-disciplinary knowledge and an abundance of practical experience. For this purpose, manufacturing processes are divided into four categories and students learn manufacturing overall in the Department of System Design.

Four Categories of System Design

Industrial Design (Concept & Design)

Sort out the purpose and necessity of objects and replace with specific forms.

Robotics (Material & Function)

Choose materials suitable for objects and investigate functions

Simulation (Simulation & Visualization)

Evaluate formats and functions of objects

Production (Production & Management)

Manufacture objects suitable for the era

Characteristics of Curriculum for Studying Manufacturing

The Department offers relay lecture type subjects by designer and engineer lecturers with vast actual business experience, creation type subjects based on practice and actual experience, and project type subjects to nurture motivation and practical general design skills in collaboration with actual society. Moreover, for deeper understanding of these four categories, general seminars in small groups are offered for each in cooperation with lecture courses. In addition, by studying all of the project subjects of the four categories, well-balanced system design skills are nurtured. For students who so desire, applied project research is offered and problem solving skills with more leading-edge research tasks are fostered.
