The 2014 “EuroPhilosophie” Hosei Program Begins

April 18, 2014

On April 1, a day when the cherry blossoms were in full bloom, the 2014 “EuroPhilosophie” (Euro Philosophy) Hosei Program (Erasmus Mundus Master Program) was launched.

The “EuroPhilosophie” refers to one of the European Union’s international education courses, the “Erasmus Mundus Master Program.” In this program, the world’s leading universities, mainly European institutions, educate students in alliance with other universities with respect to each specialty. Students study at a different university in a different county every semester for two years, and receive degrees from multiple universities at the end of the program. Since 2009, Hosei University has been one of the nine “EuroPhilosophie” universities, offering one semester classes in French every year for students taking the program.

On April 1, the 2014 Hosei Program began. The orientation for faculty members and students from Europe was held at the Ichigaya Campus with the presence of Professor Shin Abiko (Faculty of Letters), a responsible person on the side of Hosei University in terms of this program. Having visited Japan for the first time and stayed in Tokyo only for a very short time, the students attending the orientation were totally new to life in Japan. Bewildered by the unfamiliar city and lifestyle, which were completely different from those of their home countries, the students paid close attention to the explanation by the staff of the International Center in order to adapt themselves to their new life. Later, they moved to the University library where they were taught how to search for and borrow documents during their three-month stay in Japan. They were also given a tour of the stack room.

That evening, an opening party was held at the Hosei University Staff Club located on the 25th floor of the Boissonade Tower. Attended by the staff members of the Embassy of France as well as President Tanaka, Professor Masuda (Executive Member of the Board of Trustees), and other staff of Hosei University, the pleasant and successful party marked the opening of the Hosei Program.
